Tell A Story, Change the Conversation

I leverage a decade of experience as a writing professor and publishing professional to help authors shape public conversations and upend the status quo.

As a writing coach, idea partner, editor, and collaborative writer, I empower authors to locate their purpose, visualize their ideas, and translate them to the page. I build strong creative partnerships in which I am a supportive expert reader with the industry acumen and editorial savvy to make your vision a reality.

I work with a wide range of genres, including nonfiction, memoir, fiction, poetry, and graphic novels. My clientele has run the gamut from experienced authors to first-time book writers, TV and film screenwriters, poets, and stand-up comedians. I work with a variety of topics but have a special interest and expertise in cognition and the mind, creative thinking and problem-solving, mental illness and mental health, gender and sexuality, trauma, disability, neurodiversity, pop culture, travel, and activism.

Manuscripts

I offer manuscript editing at all stages of the process, from initial feedback on early drafts to end-stage polishing.

Developmental Editing provides holistic feedback on a draft, focusing on content, structure, purpose, and voice, ultimately offering you a clear path to revision.

Line Editing focuses on style, sentence structure and organization, grammar, and punctuation.

Proofreading polishes your draft, catching any final grammar, word choice, or punctuation errors.

Coaching & Idea Development

When you have a winning idea and need help developing its execution, my coaching services are here to help.

Idea Coaching helps you hone your concept, create an outline, develop a hook, and pinpoint your place in the cultural conversation.

Draft Coaching keeps you accountable, maintains your momentum, guides you in developing key writing skills, and provides regular feedback as you write.

Book Proposals

Book proposals can challenge even the most seasoned author. My suite of services will help you craft a “best in class” proposal that excites publishers.

Book Proposal Coaching introduces you to the book proposal genre, helps you locate your book’s market and sales potential, and provides feedback as you draft.

Book Proposal Editing includes developmental editing, line editing, and proofreading on your proposal draft.

Book Proposal Ghostwriting takes the onus off you to write your proposal, as we work closely to develop your concept and positioning while I write the proposal.

About Me

My career has spanned numerous areas of the writing and publishing world: I have served as a professional editor, a writing professor, a collaborative writer, and a bookseller. My work is fueled by the belief that fresh ideas, uncommon perspectives, and the stories we use to share them carve the path to a better world. I join my love of idea development with my deep commitment to creating compelling narratives that spark new ways of thinking.

Whether working with memoirists, novelists, or public intellectuals, I help my clients forge unconventional connections between their ideas, develop innovative structures, and craft stories that will inspire the minds and capture the hearts of readers. My clients have gone on to gain the attention of agents and publishers at the forefront of the industry. I have also contributed narrative consulting and development on a story being made into a feature film with Netflix.

I hold a BA in Creative Writing from Carnegie Mellon University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland. For nearly a decade, I was an English professor and writing coach at Columbia University, Fordham University, The City University of New York, The Fashion Institute of Technology, and in youth programs at Johns Hopkins University. I developed and taught courses including advanced research-writing in the fine arts and design fields, speculative fiction and fantasy literature, and essay-writing on themes including protest and dissent, urban studies, and pop culture.

I also worked as a bookseller and publicist for independent bookstores, as a publicity consultant for authors and small presses, and as an editor for numerous journals, where I learned what makes a publisher pick up a book - and what makes a reader buy it.

My own writing, which is heavily influenced by my time living abroad in Ireland, Morocco, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, explores themes of mental health, trauma, identity, memory, travel, and culture. My essays have been featured in publications including Electric Literature, Guernica, and BuzzFeed, and my poetry has been widely published in literary journals including The Sugar House Review and Anderbo. I have also trained in comedic writing with the Upright Citizens Brigade and am earning my certificate in comics creation through the Sequential Artists Workshop.

Testimonials

“Choosing an editor and literary coach for your work is like choosing a best friend for your imagination.  It is a deeply important and intimate role.  During a career in publishing as an editor at HarperCollins, an agent for more than a dozen NYTs bestsellers, and an author of many books, I have worked with many brilliant editors over the years and I can honestly say that Shannon Azzato Stephens is truly one of the very, very best.   Shannon works in that delicate and rare space of being able to take an idea or a draft and find the true heart and soul of the author’s message and to help shape it into its most beautiful and successful expression.  She did this with me personally to come up with several breakthroughs on a story that has now been optioned to be made into a film.  A brilliant teacher of the craft, a skilled editor on the page, and a kind and generous guide along the dark and stormy creative path, you could not entrust your literary work to someone better than Shannon.”

- Douglas Abrams, New York Times Bestselling Co-Author of The Book of Joy and The Book of Hope, Founder and President of Idea Architects Book and Media Agency, Former Senior Editor at Harper Collins Publishers

“I had been stuck in my writing for 18 years. It was impossible for me to write a line, and the idea of being published paralyzed me. Then Shannon arrived! With her maieutic process, she helped me give birth to my message and structure my thoughts.  Thanks to her patience, I managed to face all my resistance and regained my sovereignty as an author. I highly recommend Shannon's services - she excels in her art.”

- Amandine Roche, Humanitarian, Founder and Director of the Inner Peace Corps and the Amanuddin Foundation, and bestselling author of Nomade Sur La Voie d’Ella Maillart

“Working with Shannon was the best investment I've made in my book writing journey! From start to finish Shannon provided thoughtful, kind support while also having an eye on the project vision, details, and high-intensity timeline. She was a huge asset in helping me refine my ideas and edit my work by providing  valuable feedback, insight and constructive criticism when needed. Everything about working with Shannon felt like a partnership, and she made me a better writer in the process. I will work with her again when the opportunity arises.”
